Australian 20 cent coin’s tiny detail makes it worth a small fortune

Australian 20 cent coin’s tiny detail makes it worth a small fortune

Ausrtalians are being urged to check their 20 cent pieces for a rare detail that could help skyrocket their value to prospective coin collectors.

On most Australian 20 cent coins, the base of the number two is a straight line.

However, in a series of coins released in 1966, the base has a slight curve in the shape of a wave.

Though it’s a minor detail, it can multiply its value to collectors hundred-fold.

According to a coin collector known as @thehistoryofmoney on TikTok, the coin can be worth between $250 and $4000.

“Find a 20c coin from 1966 and turn it over to the tails side,” he said.

“Look at the bottom of the number two – at the top of the base, if it’s wavy, you’re gonna be in the money.”

The Royal Australian Mint, which manufactures Australia’s coins, says it tries to limit mistakes or misprints and understands why “error coins” become circulated.

However, even with the strict screening process, it’s impossible to say exactly how many have made their way into Aussie wallets.

“Due to the rarity of these coins, avid coin collectors are continually on the hunt in an effort to add these valuable coins to their collections,” a spokeswoman for the Mint told 7NEWS.com.au.

Other rare coins

While society is becoming increasingly cashless, it might be worth taking a look at your coins to see if they’re all they seem to be.

In 2000, a “mule” coin was released combining the $1 and 10c coins.

It can fetch from $300 up to $4000 depending on its quality.

Also in 2000, a 50c coin was minted featuring an incuse flag — one sunk into the surface of the coin — rather than a relief one. It can be worth from $50 to $1000.

The $2 red poppy coin, released in 2012, could be worth from $80 up to $280.
